For today, the nurses have scheduled a patient with paralytic scoliosis. Unable to walk, the patients arrives at the clinic in her wheelchair. At first the patient is confused as to where she should go. She has difficulty finding the correct room and navigating the hallways in her wheelchair. Finally, the patient runs into one of the nurses and the nurse directs her to the brace fitting room. The nurse helps transfer the patient from her wheelchair onto one of the tables. The patient is fitted with leg braces and, after the braces have been properly applied, the patient is trained to walk with them. The patient is shown how the locks on her leg braces work, how she can walk with the assistance of the nurses, and how she can get around using underarm crutches.
Once the patient understands how to use her new leg braces, the nurses begins the process of applying a Milwaukee brace. First, the nurse braids the patient’s hair so that it won’t tangle in the neck ring of the back brace. Afterwards, the nurse puts the brace onto the patient. One the brace has been applied the nurse has the patient breathe deeply so that the brace can fitted correctly without any pinching or excess restriction. Once the brace is properly fitted, the nurse applies a corrective leather strap to the brace.
Once both the leg and back braces are applied correctly, the nurse trains the patient to walk in her myriad of braces. The nurse leads the patient on a practice walk down the stairs and around the hospital facilities. Finally, when the patient is comfortable walking in her new braces, the nurse helps the patient back into her wheelchair. The nurse then leads the wheelchair bound, fully braced patient back out of the clinic.
